Can a hash be reversed?

No. A cryptographic hash is a one-way function. You can compare hashes, but you cannot recover the original text from one.

Which algorithm should I use?

For new work, prefer SHA-256 or stronger. MD5 and SHA-1 are fine for non-security uses such as cache keys but are no longer safe for signatures.

That is the point of hashing: the same input always produces the same digest, which is what makes integrity checks possible.
